Contraceptive Market Size Visualizer (CMSV)

How to navigate the page? What can be done with the information?

Subnational Market Size Estimation

What are the different indicators for each administrative level?

Each of the administrative levels displays a specific set of indicators.

At the district level, indicators of overall modern contraceptive use, users of traditional methods, and women with an unmet need for contraceptives are displayed.

At the region/province level, we focused on short-term and product-specific estimation differentiated by the source of contraceptives.

How should I interpret the maps of use by sector?

The maps at the regional/provincial level depict the number of contraceptive users categorized by sector. The map labeled ‘Current Private Sector Users’ shows the estimated distribution of current utilization within the private sector for the chosen indicator. Meanwhile, the map titled ‘Current Public Sector Users with Potential Financial Ability to pay for methods’ identifies number of women who are likely able to afford private sector contraceptive products (see methodology). This helps pinpoint regions/provinces where efforts to stimulate demand in the private sector could be beneficial.

National Volume and Value Estimation

How should I use the information from the different groups of estimates that comprise the total?

The national volume and value estimation demonstrates the potential increase in users, volume, and value of implementing effective evidence-based interventions and providing a more enabling environment for the private sector provision of contraceptives.

While users can obtain the overall estimated number from the total, the estimate of each of the four groups may also serve specific information needs. For instance, one may prefer to understand what the private sector users would be under the current situation in the next year without any foreseeable interventions, taking into consideration population growth. This estimate is shown as “current private sector users”. Alternatively, users may be interested in the “estimated number of potential users of the private sector – from public sector consumers” to determine how many more private sector users may result from having a more enabling environment in a similar setting, in order to advocate for a specific evidence-based policy or administrative change.

Methodology

The CMSV provides two different analyses of the contraceptive market size in the selected countries: 1) the subnational market size estimation, and 2) the national volume and value estimation. Each analysis uses unique methods, but terms and definitions are consistent.
