Subnational Market Size Estimator

A non-profit contraceptive service provision organization has recently received additional funding to expand its subsidized contraceptive service from Karnali province to another province in Nepal to increase contraceptive service coverage and improve the use of modern contraceptives among women having an unmet contraceptive need. While the organization can identify the next most impoverished province in Nepal, it also needs to consider the number of existing contraceptive users, those with an unmet contraceptive need, and the density of private-sector clinics in the province. Furthermore, the organization needs to identify a district where their new clinic should be located within the province. Using the Subnational Market Size Estimator at the provincial level, the organization can easily identify that Sudur Paschim has the lowest private clinic density in the nation while having a relatively strong reliance on the public sector for short-term contraceptives. Using the Subnational Market Size Estimator at the district level, Kailali district within Sudur Paschim was estimated to have a large number of modern contraceptive users and women with an unmet contraceptive need.

National Volume and Value Estimator

The government of Nepal has recently loosened the restriction on the administration of DMPA-SC and provided guidelines to enable pharmacists, clinicians, and pharmacy technicians to administer or observe self-injection. The Pharmacy Council also offers free training to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on the administration of DMPA-SC. Amid these policy and programmatic developments to facilitate the uptake of DMPA-SC, a contraceptive wholesaler is interested in the potential market of DMPA-SC in Nepal. Using the national volume and value estimator, the contraceptive wholesaler can use the DMPA-SC expansion scenario, conservatively assuming a low intervention effect. It sees a potential market of ~100,000 units of DMPA-SC annually. With this initial information, the contraceptive wholesaler could further the conversation with its affiliated service providers to understand the roll-out and implementation of DMPA-SC in the market.
