With deep gratitude to the people of USAID

July, 2025

As the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) winds down many of its global health programs, we at Metrics for Management—and across the global health and development community—feel the weight of this moment.

Through programs targeting malaria, family planning, maternal and child health, HIV, nutrition, and more, USAID helped millions of people live longer, healthier lives—often with the most cost-effective interventions science has to offer.

🦟Malaria: Once endemic in 140 countries (including the US) is now present in just 83 countries. Thanks to the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI)—led by USAID—millions of mosquito nets were distributed, indoor spraying campaigns protected homes, and access to rapid diagnostic tests and lifesaving treatment expanded dramatically. Since PMI began, it is estimated that:

  • Over 11.7 million lives have been saved from malaria globally;
  • 63.3 million treatments delivered;
  • 2.1 billion cases averted, most of them in children under five.

🤰🏽Family Planning: USAID has helped expand access to voluntary family planning services for over 50 years, helping millions of women and couples make informed choices about having children. USAID-supported programs have:

  • Reached approximately 24.2 million women and girls each year with modern contraceptive services;
  • Prevented an estimated 8.1 million unintended pregnancies;
  • Prevented 2.6 million unsafe abortions;
  • Prevented 14,000 maternal deaths annually.

The ripple effect of these programs is profound: women and girls stay in school longer, families invest more in each child, and communities see sustained improvements in health and economic outcomes.

💊HIV/AIDS (through PEPFAR) – Through this bi-partisan initiative, USAID helped turn the tide on the HIV epidemic. The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR):

  • Saved over 26 million lives;
  • Brought antiretroviral treatment to more than 20 million people;
  • Ensured 7.8 million babies were born HIV-free.

Through sustained investment, AIDS-related deaths have declined by approximately 59% and new HIV infections are down around 52% in PEPFAR-supported countries.

This work has been key to strengthening the three legged stool upon which US security rests: Diplomacy, Aid and Defense. None alone will achieve our national objectives, and dismantling a leg which builds trust, goodwill, and has generational benefits that build strong countries will be something all Americans will rue in years to come.

We owe immense thanks to the USAID staff, past and present, who gave their careers to this mission. We know you didn’t do it for the money. You didn’t do it for the perks. You did it because you are a humanitarian. You believe in development. Your legacy will live on in every child who reaches their fifth birthday, every mother who survives childbirth and every community with access to the health care they deserve.

USAID will be missed, but its impact is indelible. We look forward to working with former USAID staff members as you chart new paths, and share your skills, resilience, resourcefulness and empathy in new roles.
