M4M to support the Global Fund to Establish a Responsive, User-Centered Indicator Framework to Combat Malaria

July 2024

Press release: 16 July 2024, Baltimore

Metrics for Management (M4M) is pleased to announce the launch of a new initiative to fight malaria. The initiative, made possible by a generous grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will be a critical step in mitigating the emerging challenges that have led to a resurgence of malaria cases around the world. Tailoring data and indicators to support new interventions as well as targeted, sub-national strategies, will allow for continued reduction in malaria morbidity and mortality.

Between 2000-2015, comprehensive efforts to combat malaria resulted in declines in both incidences and mortality worldwide. From increased funding to decreased costs for essential interventions, such as long-lasting insecticidal netsand lower-priced drugs, global cases and mortality rates fell by 37% and 60%, respectively, saving an estimated 6.2 million lives in sub-Saharan Africa alone. Since then, however, a funding plateau, coupled with issues such as insecticide resistance and disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have contributed to an increase in both cases and deaths.

To address these complexities, M4M will support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in evolving its framework for malaria data, towards one which is increasingly user-centered, allowing for enhanced country driven data collection, and to facilitate timely and informed decision-making.

“Understanding the needs of data consumers is critical to ensuring the right information is shared with the right people,” said Dr. Nirali Chakraborty, CEO of M4M. “M4M is honored to support the Global Fund’s initiative to revisit and revise indicators for malaria. Through a user-centered process, the Global Fund’s initiative will lead to more nuanced and timely data and enable better-informed programmatic decisions at the sub-national level.”
