Enhancing Family Planning Counseling Quality through Automated Feedback Systems

Mexfam, in partnership with Metrics for Management, piloted an automated tablet-based survey system using the Method Information Index (MII) to efficiently capture client feedback on family planning counseling quality. The system improved participation, streamlined data analysis, and enabled timely service improvements, demonstrating a scalable approach to enhancing reproductive health services.

Sightsavers Catch Program Uses the EquityTool

Sightsavers tested the EquityTool alongside other methods in Malawi’s CATCH program to determine whether vision care services were reaching the poorest and most underserved populations. The study confirmed that the EquityTool is a practical, reliable, and cost-effective way to assess participant wealth, enabling more equitable targeting of health interventions.

USAID Uganda Sanitation for Health Activity

The USAID Uganda Sanitation for Health Activity adopted the EquityTool to replace lengthy wealth surveys, enabling real-time, accurate assessment of household economic status for targeting water connections. Using these insights, the program developed affordable, tailored payment solutions and outreach strategies that improved access for low-income households while ensuring subsidies reached those most in need.

Contraceptive Market Size Visualizer

To address limited access to reliable contraceptive market data, M4M developed the CMSV—an interactive tool that models market size, share, and distribution for Nepal, Ghana, and Kenya. Developed with support from USAID through the FHM Engage project, the CMSV delivers actionable intelligence with user-friendly dashboards, maps, and open-access resources, enabling more effective policy, funding, and program decisions.

Zambia

Evaluation of Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia

To evaluate the Rotary Foundation, World Vision and the Gates Foundation’s effort to expand community health worker capacity in remote districts, M4M conducted a mixed-methods assessment of the Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia initiative. Through extensive stakeholder interviews, CHW focus groups, and longitudinal analysis of HMIS data, the evaluation demonstrated that trained and well-equipped CHWs significantly increased malaria case detection and treatment. Funded by The Rotary Foundation, the findings provide a clear roadmap for scaling this community-based model across Zambia and other malaria-endemic regions.

Ghana

Evaluation of MSI’s public sector FP strengthening initiative

M4M evaluated a five-year MSI Reproductive Choices initiative to strengthen public sector capacity to deliver high-quality LARC services across 300 facilities in Ghana. Through multiple waves of facility, provider, and client data collection—combined with national health information system analysis—the evaluation identified opportunities to refine training, improve equipment availability, and reduce stock-outs. Results were shared throughout the evaluation to strengthen the initiative. Funded by the MaxMind Foundation, the findings confirmed strong acceptance of the intervention and highlighted a collaborative model that supports long-term sustainability.

Person-Centered Maternity Care scale

M4M, in partnership with UCSF and UCLA, developed a 13-item Person-Centered Maternity Care (PCMC) scale to reliably assess dignity, respect, communication, autonomy, and emotional support in maternity services. Piloted in India, Ghana and Kenya, the tool is easy to administer with minimal training and has been recognized globally, including inclusion by USAID in the Demographic and Health Surveys SPA. The PCMC scale supports routine quality improvement and evidence-based decision-making in maternal healthcare worldwide.

Advancing Private Sector Measurement for Health Systems

M4M advanced measurement of private sector health engagement in Ghana, Kenya, Nepal, and Tanzania, combining market assessments, willingness-to-pay research, and global data mapping to generate actionable insights. The work quantified private sector contributions, identified market gaps, and compared HIV self-testing and PrEP use across multiple countries, informing strategies to strengthen health systems and expand private sector participation. Funded by USAID through the FHM Engage project, these analyses provide evidence-based guidance to optimize health service delivery and support universal health coverage.
